| The Qualicum
River is a small stream that flows northeast from Horne Lake and crosses
Highway 19 approximately 15km northwest of Qualicum Beach on the east
coast of Vancouver Island.
The fishable length of the Qualicum River is 10km, with access
by hiking from the Big Qualicum (Hatchery) Project parking area,
west off Highway 19, on a well-signed road.
Angling pressure
is heavy in areas near the hatchery, but diminishes to light pressure
in the upstream stretches. Access to the river downstream from the
hatchery is restricted.
In addition to the steelhead fishery, the Qualicum River provides
some good flyfishing for coho salmon, with good fall runs of chinook,
coho and chum salmon. Cutthroat trout are also present.
